Campaign
Details:
Workhorse Customer Chassis (WCC) has issued Recall 51101-C
to address issues with certain W20, W21, and W22 chassis.
A
VIN lookup is available here. The recall was issued to
address brake failures, specifically in which the brakes
may have begun to drag due to moisture causing corrosion
to the piston. Generally, the additional heat from the
brake drag exacerbated this brake drag and the coach would
power to a stop.
The
campaign upgrades a previous design of Bosch Calipers
to a new design and repairs related damage. However, Workhorse,
with the approval of NTSHA, has issued guidelines under
which it will replace components other than the calipers.
Regardless of the component involved, the guidance on
component repair is based on each wheel end individually.
In other words, if the right front rotor is replaced under
the recall, the left front rotor would not be replaced
unless the left front qualified for replacement based
on its own condition.
Whats Covered:
Calipers
All calipers (4) are covered under the repair and will
be replaced at no cost to the owner of the coach, even
if you have had an interim repair made.
ABS Sensors
ABS Sensors damaged by brake over heating will be replaced
under the campaign. A diagnostic trouble code (DTC) of
21, 25, 31, or 35 are related to heat damage caused by
caliper failure and will be replaced under the campaign.
Generally, the ABS sensor will appear heat damaged (melted),
but not in all circumstances. If the ABS light is on,
and the DTC in the module is not one of the above listed
codes, the failure is not related to the campaign and
will need to be repaired at the owners expense.
Brake
Rotors
Replacement of brake rotors is covered under the campaign
if either
1)
rotors have significant pad transfer
2)
Heat cracks that run through rotor face to the internal
webbing.
Pad
transfer occurs when the overheated rotors melt the pad
material and transfer that material on to the rotor itself.
The pad transfer must be evident on the inboard side of
the rotor. Based on the campaign, failure to lubricate
the pad slide pins will result in pad transfer on the
outboard side only. Cracks on the face of the rotor is
considered heat checking and is a non-covered condition.
