New
UltraPower "Grade Brake" Extends Brake Life
Centralia, Washington, September 2009 -
UltraPower
has introduced a new, innovative brake system designed for
travel on downhill grades. The UltraPower "Grade Brake"
is engineered to help control the vehicle's speed by using
the engine and transmission to control the shifting process,
thereby slowing the vehicle and minimizing brake usage.
The new Grade Brake is available for the 2001-2004 Workhorse
chassis with an Allison 1000 transmission. The unit is also
marketed for pick-up trucks.
The
UltraPower Grade Brake is sensitive to speed, weight, and
a significant increase of braking action. Sensing brake
usage, the unit activates and causes a downshift from overdrive
to 4th gear. If more slowing is desired, the Grade Brake
will downshift to the appropriate gear in order to maintain
the desired speed. The Grade Brake then up-shifts back to
overdrive as soon as throttle pressure is resumed and the
proper up-shift is achieved.
Since
the computer in the Allison transmission is custom programmed
with the installation of the Grade Brake, the speed in which
the transmission shifts into Overdrive is programmed from
57 mph, down to 51 mph. This generates an increase in gas
mileage and produces a more comfortable ride - popular benefits
of this unit.
The
UltraPower Grade Brake is connected with the transmission
control module (TCM), which monitors vehicle speed, deceleration,
engine torque and brake pedal usage. The TCM controls the
shifting process to slow the vehicle utilizing the transmission
and engine. Braking action is reduced on downhill grades
which extend the life of one's brakes. The Grade Brake increases
the driver's comfort and ease of handling the vehicle.
Bill
and Mabel Becker reported the results of installing their
new Grade Brake, "Well, the new UltraPower Grade Brake
system has had a good workout. We are elated with it. Mabel
now wants to do all the driving. Between the Grade Brake
and the Safe-T-Plus, driving has become fun for us. We were
on some very bumpy highway and over several mountain passes
on our trip after leaving Centralia, so had plenty of times
to use and compare the new system to how it was before.
Wow!! That all we can say. We want to thank you and all
the good people at Brazel's [UltraPower manufacturer]. They
are real pros at what they do-"
The Grade Brake, of course, does not replace normal safety
measures such as proper loading, correct installation of
tow brakes for a vehicle in tow, or proper maintenance of
braking systems.
The
Grade Brake is an UltraPower product, manufactured by Brazel's
RV Performance Center in Centralia, Washington. The Grade
Brake may be purchased and installed at Brazel's RV Performance
Center or at any UltraPower dealer nationwide.
